This section is an excerpt from the book “Negotiating International Business - The Negotiator’s Reference Guide to 50 Countries Around the World” by Lothar Katz. It has been updated with inputs from readers and others, most recently in March 2008.

The United Kingdom includes four constituent parts: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The term Great Britain and Northern Ireland also refers to the U.K. People belonging to any of the four groups, the English, Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Irish, usually prefer to be called that rather than being called British or Brits. Generally, members of all four groups may emphasize that they are distinctly different from each other. People from outside of England might be highly offended if you referred to them as English. In addition, many in the U.K. do not consider themselves Europeans. Businesspeople in the U.K., especially those among younger generations, are usually very experienced in interacting with other cultures. The reforms of the 1980s and the trend towards globalization have shaken up traditional beliefs and business attitudes. However, that does not always mean that the British are open-minded. When negotiating business here, realize that people may often expect things to be done ‘their way.’

Relationships and Respect
Building lasting and trusting relationships is important to most people in this country. However, they are not a necessary precondition for initial business interactions. The British are characteristically pragmatic and may engage on a trial basis, expecting to get to know you better as you do business together. Although people in the country may emphasize near-term results over long-range objectives, they are generally more interested in building long-term relationships than in making quick deals. ...Doing Business in South Korea South Korea has to be classed as one of the world’s great economic success stories. Along with Taiwan, South Korea is the only country which has recorded five consecutive decades of economic growth in excess of 5%. This is an amazing achievement which is the result of careful governmental macro-engineering, sound business practice and sheer hard work from the population at large. Economists feel that, given the lengthy stagflation seen in Japan, that it will not be too long before South Korean levels of prosperity are at a par with Japan. Both South Korea and Japan are intensely conformist societies (one of the many similarities between the two countries) but they differ in one fundamental thing. When faced with hardship or adversity the Japanese tend to turn inwards and backwards towards the familiar and comfortable whereas the South Koreans are absolute masters of change and rebuild. If things aren’t working, they just change them and they have proved adept at doing this very quickly and very effectively – you only need to look at the contrasting reactions to the crisis that hit Asia in the 1990’s. South Korean Malware

...South Korean Malware Attack Reporting and technical details surrounding the malware used in the March 20, 2013, attack on South Korean assets have been varied and inconsistent. However, there are some commonalities reported across multiple organizations that provide some level of insight into the malware, dubbed ‘DarkSeoul’. The common attributes of the attack campaign are the following: * The malicious file wipes the master boot record (MBR) and other files. * The malware was hard coded with a specific execution date and time and searches machines for credentials with administrative/root access to servers. * The malware is written to specifically target South Korean victims. * The attack is effective on multiple operating systems. * The design is low sophistication – high damage. When assessing the potential risk to U.S. Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CIKR), it is important to understand that DarkSeoul appears to have been coded for a specific target in this case and designed to evade typical South Korean antivirus processes. As this malware is currently packaged, it is a low risk to U.S. CIKR, however, the concepts underpinning this attack would likely succeed in many common enterprise environments. For this reason, U.S. CIKR owners and operators should continue the best standard security practices to avoid infection and propagation of a wiper or other type of malware that may impact their systems. But if the new associate is familiar with certain business etiquettes, being a new associate would be easier than they expected. Businesses should use proper business etiquette to help a new associate feel more comfortable. As a part of running a functional business internally a business should take new employees and start an onboard program. An onboard program should consist of proper meet and greet, an agenda, material, and a time frame. With a proper meet and greet it gives the new associate the feeling of being welcomed. It gives the employee the opportunity to meet the management and other employees in different departments for future references. I just recently started at Super K-Mart two months ago and still have not met everyone. I believe that management should have made sure that I met everyone and knew who to turn to for different questions I may have.
