Abstract

Retinal biometric security is a newer technology that is becoming increasingly popular, and with its advances in technology and increase in product suppliers, it’s undeniable that this is a growing methodology with surefire longevity. This method of biometric security is based on a retinal scan that involves the use of a low-intensity coherent light source projected onto the retina to illuminate the blood vessels, which are photographed and analyzed.
Due to the intricacies, a retina scan cannot be replicated, as it is impossible to forge a human retina. Because of this fact, a retinal scan has an error rate of 1 in 10 million; compared to fingerprint identification error rates sometimes as high as 1 in 500 (Biometric Newsportal, n.d.). In all its greatness, as with any technology, it comes with both advantages and disadvantages throughout the various phases of implementation. With the pros vastly outweighing the cons, retinal biometrics has still created its own namespace and presence in the world of technology.
With current retinal biometric applications and technologies being implemented in the financial, government, medical, and mobile sectors, it’s safe to bet that there is a great future laying ahead for this area of biometrics. Although there maybe anticipated competition, retinal scanning is currently leading the pack of biometrics methodologies and the trends prove that this will remain the case for many years to come.

Zrenner, a member of the distinguished Department of Pathophysiology of Vision and Neuro-Ophthamology at the University Eye Hospital in Tubingen, Germany, explores the evolving concepts of Subretinal and Epiretinal Implants use in repairing degenerative or hereditary vision impairments plaguing millions the world over. Are Perceptual Abilities Innate

...The result showed that infants were likely to reach the nearer object. Furthermore infants were found to move their arms and head in order to defend themselves when they were being attacked. This theoretically means that some depth perception is innate. However, many psychologists argued that the movement of arms and head can be explained as the development of movements and random actions, rendering the evidence of Bower et al’s (1965, 1970) study as insufficient. Furthermore, Slater et al (1990) also conducted an experiment, aimed to see whether infants will percept based on the retinal size or the physical size. The results showed that infants were looking at preferences consistently and these preferences were all based on retinal size. This experiment suggested that retinal image size was more obvious to a newborn baby. Also, Slater et al. (1990) also concluded that infants will respond to retinal image sizes first, but not physical size of the object. In other words, perceptual ability is innate. However, there are many studies also suggest that perception ability is a process of nurture. Colin Turnbull? studied the life of people indigenous to Kenya. Due to living in a rain forest, most of them are hunters. They have to use distance cues to interpret size. However when they were born, they all lacked perceptual abilities. Complications affecting the eye Hypertensive retinopathy is a condition characterized by a spectrum of retinal vascular signs in people with elevated blood pressure. The retinal circulation undergoes a series of pathophysiological changes in response to elevated blood pressure. In the initial,vasoconstrictive stage, there is vasospasm and an increase in retinal arteriolar tone owing to local autoregulatory mechanisms. This stage is seen clinically as a generalized narrowing of the retinal arterioles. Persistently elevated blood pressure leads to intimal thickening, hyperplasia of the media wall, and hyaline degeneration in the subsequent, sclerotic, stage. This stage corresponds to more severe generalized and focal areas of arteriolar narrowing, changes in the arteriolar and venular junctions, and alterations in the arteriolar light reflex (i.e., widening and accentuation of the central light reflex, or "copper wiring"). This is followed by an exudative stage, in which there is disruption of the blood–retina barrier, necrosis of the smooth muscles and endothelial cells, exudation of blood and lipids, and retinal ischemia. These changes are manifested in the retina as microaneurysms, hemorrhages, hard exudates, and cotton-wool spots. ...Retinal Implants The article I researched is “Will Retinal Implants Restore Vision?” by Eberhart Zrenner. In this article the author begins by discussing the vision process. It begins with light passing through the pupil. Next the light is focused onto the rods and cones on the outer layer of the retina by the lens. Once this happens the image is transformed into both chemical and electrical signals. The electrical signals are carried from the retina, by ganglion neurons, into the optic nerve. The axons of these ganglion neurons are what form the optic nerve. Finally the information is transferred from the optic nerve to the primary visual cortex, which is a part of the brain. The retina is considered the neuroprocessor of the eye and is responsible for the recognition of images. The article continues next stating that there are many different groups of researchers who are creating types of implants to possibly help the vision of patients with retinas that are degenerating. The author discusses, in great detail, one type is known as an electrical implant. These implants are able to connect right onto the retina. Zrenner states that when electrical implants were used in animal experiments, they have shown positive results. There is, however, a great deal of future research and experiments that must take place before they are used for humans. Background: A 62-year-old female with no history of eye complications that was diagnosed with Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in the right eye after a traumatic fall. Differential Diagnosis: Retinal Tear, Tractional retinal detachment, In exudative detachment Treatment: Scleral buckling surgery to fix the detachment. Uniqueness: No history of eye problems. The detachment happened after a traumatic fall. The individual also suffered from a humerus fracture and a serve concussion. Conclusion: Most Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment’s do not happen from traumatic events. The patient did not have symptoms of the detachment until a month after the fall. The concussion was diagnosed but no other tests were done for the individuals’ eyes. Those should have been checked to prevent the medical emergency. Body: A rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurs due to a break in the retina that allows fluid to pass from the vitreous space into the subretinal space between the sensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium.3 A minority of retinal detachments result from trauma, including blunt blows to the orbit, penetrating trauma, and concussions to the head.
