Abstract What is Problem-Based Learning? Problem-Based Learning (PBL) began in the medical field; however, it has been applied to disciplines at colleges and universities, different subjects in the K-12 education system, and a variety of other professions as well. This paper will focus on the usefulness of Problem-Based Learning in the role of education, the driving motivation, and how it will impact the future of educators.

Problem-Based Learning: Its Application and Role in Education Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a student driven, teacher guided method of instruction which weaves the ideas and theories of Bloom, Piaget, Vygotsky, and Gardner, into a cooperative learning process in which students receive and process information about ideas they have found interesting. The students then apply the knowledge gathered through the research phase to real-life situations (Bell, 2010; Levin, 2001). PBL, which began in the medical field, was used primarily as a way for medical students to improve their own problem solving abilities (Levin, 2001). Levin (2001) re-emphasized from previous studies that PBL serves as a foundation for many teacher education programs because it is consistent with constructivist theories of learning. Kauchak and Eggen (2011) define constructivism as a theory of learning based on the idea that learners actively construct their own understanding of the material by questioning and researching, instead of receiving the information through direct instruction (p. 210). ...Brain Based Learning For many years science and education have concentrated on learning and the mind, but today’s neuroscientists and educators are seeing learning from a different scope – the brain. From this viewpoint, learning is creating links – by linking the information in which the student has prior knowledge or interest, the student is able to expand upon this and learn something else which he can relate it to. For example, in a history class when discussing Native Americans, a teacher may ask the students relate prior information they have on Native Americans. This can come from personal experiences - like seeing a burial ground, or finding an arrowhead; it can even be a movie the student relates it to. By doing this the teacher is making a personal connection between prior information the student has already attained and processed, and linking it to the information to be discussed in the class (Slavin, 2009) . Another learning stimulus that creates a learning link would finding something the student is interested in. This can be illustrated in the same scenario – students in the southern states often find Indian relics in their own backyards, piquing their interest in what happened right where they stood hundreds of years ago. It is a broad and comprehensive approach to instruction using current research from neuroscience. At the same time, though, learning cannot occur without having prior knowledge. This establishes the foundation from which to build. Past experiences, student interests, and present learning are all intertwined. As we learn, we look back at those previous experiences and memories, and make connections with what we are currently learning. Taking student's past experiences and incorporating them into lesson plans makes them more appealing and interesting to the students. Past experiences aid in adding new knowledge on top of prior knowledge. While past experiences and student interests are just one of the factors that influence learning, teachers also have an equal influence. Teachers have to be diverse in their methods to maintain student interest. If they don't, maximum results will not be achieved, and students will not maintain focus which can lead to bigger issues such as disruptions. ...PBL Reflections Project-Based Learning is an amazing, innovative way to enhance a child’s learning potential through developmentally appropriate activities, lessons and projects. It is a well known fact that people have a greater tendency to learn more by doing, not just seeing or hearing. Children that are given the opportunity to engage in a hands-on lesson will have a greater understanding of the material. Students who understand the meaning of what they are learning retain more of the information and apply the knowledge more skillfully (1). Project-based learning allows children the chance to “learn by doing”. Project-based learning can be tailored to fit the educational needs of any elementary/middle/high school grade level. This type of social constructivism allows for the students to follow the teacher’s guided input while constructing their own ideas through hands-on activities and social interaction with peers. ...Introduction PBL (Problem-based learning) is a student-centered education based on real-world application. It was pioneered by Howard Barrows, an American professor of neurology, in the medical school program at McMaster University in Canada in 1969. It emphasized on setting studies into complex and significant problem scenarios through the cooperation of students to solve real problems. PBL aims to discover the hidden scientific facts behind the issues and to improve the problem-solving skills and independent learning abilities. The fundamental aspects contained in the implementation of PBL process include assembling a team, getting a new problem, follow-up activities, activity reporting, and reflection after the whole process is done (Delisle, 1997). After the emergence of the PBL pedagogy, it was propagated and improved in more than 60 medical schools, from the original field of medical education to other areas of education, from training graduate students to the area of primary school, secondary and university education (Delisle, 1997). Currently, a survey indicated that there are 130 medical schools in North America that had introduced or prepared to launch the PBL pedagogy, which accounts for 86.2% of the institutions surveyed (Barell, 2006).
