CHAPTER 5 SUMMERY

We have all seen or heard someone that has said some derogatory language.

Most people couldn’t careless and in some groups its part of their everyday

language.

The part is that they will never change; they’re living the rest of their vive

that way. The only way to change a society is to train the children in that society

to respect the rights of others and I believe by mixing races and cultures we

create a better understanding amongst all children, so differences don’t seem so

scary and create a positive atmosphere for them to learn in.

In most states there are early childhood development programs like daycare,

kindergarten, preschool classes this is where attitudes are developed and molded.

They are Americas hope for the future. This of course applies to gender identity.

Girls are trained to be subservient to the male ego.

The major problem in America isn’t the men who are trained for most part

by women, but women themselves. Women have a tendency to agree and

reinforce the female stereotypes. Their inaction makes change almost impossible,

why should men change when these attitudes’ are reinforced by wives and

mothers. If the women, whether they are single or married would vote with one

mind things would change.

This book speaks of institutional discrimination, women may see and

experience discrimination, but without organization their efforts will fail, you may

say that there is the National Organization of Women, they have done some good

work for women, but the question should be is why aren’t more women joining

this organization, the answer is in my opinion. Most women don’t recognize that

Unjustified discrimination is distinguishing something from something else on a basis that is not justified (i.e. don’t hire him because he is black). The term discrimination commonly replaces the term unjustified discrimination in business, philosophy, psychology and day-to-day community life. In a just and fair society, such as we Canadians aspire to, a job applicant’s race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age, orientation, mental ability, or physical condition should not disadvantage them in career choices or job competitions. If a short Asian female firefighter can do the job, she should get the job. ..._________________________________________________________________________________________ Institutional Racism and Racial Discrimination in the U.S. Health Care System Institutional racism and racial discrimination in the U.S. health care system has been part of a long continuum dating back over 400 years. After hundreds of years of active discrimination, efforts were made to admit minorities into the "mainstream" health system but these efforts were flawed. Colin Gordon in his book Dead on Arrival portrays a very strong stance towards this issue when he states, “The American welfare state has always been, at root, a Jim Crow welfare state – disdainful of citizenship claims of racial minorities, deferential to a southern-controlled Congress, and leery of the racial implications of universal social programs” (172). It is evident that throughout the history of U.S. health care that race has shaped health provisions in a number of ways, most noticeably in private and public health care institutions. ...Discrimination The term discrimination refers to a distinct treatment of something or someone, based on a predisposed judgment. Discrimination is the act of being bias or in favor of something based on factors which make up the persons social and physical being, for example someone’s class, job, appearance, race, age or sex. Another point against affirmative action and that it is discrimination is that acceptance to college based on race would be as if Americans now are having to pay for their ancestors mistake, not their own. Since slavery was abolished under the 13th amendment, mostly white Americans are against this and feel like they haven't enslaved anyone so the question of race should not matter. ...Discrimination has been around as long as humans have been in existence. It has enslaved millions and millions it has forced entire tribes to migrate from state to state. It has locked up countless number of innocent people and it stripped the right to vote for many, even when it was promised to them. It even denied entry into this country. Discrimination against appearance is the most atrocious, yet common thing in daily life. Everything is being based on looks and personality rather than on intelligence. Society’s perception of individuals has become superficial. Society has also set up a false image of perfection in regards to how a person should look to be perceived in a certain way. Therefore, there should be an anti-discrimination law for better equal rights. Going to a store should not feel as if you were walking into a courtroom awaiting to be judged by many strangers. ...Understanding Institutional Discrimination of Promotion For a person working in a company for more than two or three years, willing to work even more, and having the required skills for the job performed, promotion is an expectation some time in the future. When the promotion is not received for certain unfair reasons, a conflict may arise and needs to be addressed. As a person with an accent and not a perfect English, I decided to choose scenario number 2 for my project. Maria, a person of Latino ancestry, has filed a complaint that she was unfairly eliminated for a promotion because of her distinctive accent. She also points out that she is the only one person of color, the only one woman, and the only one Latina in the department. She is a US citizen with a graduated degree, and has been with the company for 10 years and in her position for 7. The promotion was given to Alex instead, an Anglo, who has less time either with the company or in the position. The scenario shows though that Maria is often loud and aggressive when communicating with co-workers. She also has had some problems with the company. She has been counseled twice by her supervisor for tardiness, and once for absence. She said the reason in each situation was her necessary presence with a family member that needed help. ...One observation I made about the authors response to prejudice in “Just Walk On By” was that the author, Staples, seemed accustomed to the racial discrimination he often faced. He started to view these incidents of prejudice as quite commonly occurring. A second observation about the authors response to prejudice is that he chooses, perhaps unconsciously, to remain a shadow to the subject. Staples states, Timid, but a survivor. Lastly in “Why Looks are the Last Bastion of Discrimination”, Rhodes seems to feel that appearance related bias exacerbates disadvantages based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and class. She doesn’t seem to understand why not simply ban prejudice based on appearance. One question I had about the narrator in “Girl” was what situation was she placed in to result in being told such belittling comments and instructions? Perhaps getting these orders from a master? A question I had about the paragraph structure was why was it just one large run on sentence blurb of writing? Why not any sentence structure at all? My opinion of “Just Walk On By” was that I thought it was a rather sad reading considering that such events that Staples had experienced actually do occur in everyday life. I view it as a disgrace. I was appalled to hear in “Why Looks are the Last Bastion of Discrimination” all the events in which people were targeted for their appearance alone. Especially in the work force.
