In the October 2012 New York Times article, “The Woman Who Took the Fall for JPMorgan Chase,” author Susan Dominus provides an in-depth look at the rise of JPMorgan Chase’ chief investment officer, Ina Drew and her eventual downfall after her unit’s $6 billion trading loss. Through dozens of interviews with friends and colleagues of Drew, Susan Dominus provides a unique insight into Ina Drew’s personality and demeanor which were instrument in her rise in wealth and power. In her 30 years with the firm, Drew had become the most recognizable and powerful woman on Wall Street. The majority of the article is dedicated to providing information about how Drew was able to rise in rank in an industry where women were not accustomed to holding power. Dominus speaks to the strong will of Ina Drew and the confidence she maintained in both her knowledge and ability. Dominus points out that the trouble that eventually ended Drew’s career at the bank was a major hedge against the possibility of a credit crisis. I believe that the ethical issue that is brought to light by the author is the issue of gender. Throughout the piece, Dominus points to numerous instances of mistreatment towards women within the Wall Street arena. The majority of the article seems to praise Ina Drew in many ways, and hints towards the unfair treatment of Drew in her firing. As Drew accepts, the $6 billion dollar loss happened on her hands and she should hold responsibility for the…...

...unthinkingly embraced. To reduce volatility, banks should also strive for a sort of hormonal diversity. Testosterone levels decline as men enter middle age, and women have 10 percent to 20 percent the testosterone levels of men; both groups, Coates argues, should be better represented on trading floors. In his book he points to a study by the economists Brad Barber and Terrance Odean that shows that single women investors outperform single men over the long term (because they tend to trade their accounts less). Another study by Chicago-based Hedge Fund Research shows that hedge funds that were run by women significantly outperformed those run by men. Whether this strategy would have saved JPMorgan its recent embarrassment is unclear. Ina Drew, the banker overseeing the office where the bad trades were made, is a woman—though, according to the New York Times, she was ill when the groundwork for the trades was being laid. Two of the strongest internal critics of the trades were women as well. (Coates is currently studying whether women are susceptible to the winner effect.) At the very least, Coates says, JPMorgan should have been aware that it was fueling its employees’ most counterproductive hormone-driven tendencies. Risk management systems at many banks give traders more leeway during bull markets and rein them in during bear markets. Compensation schemes similarly reward each year’s winners and punish the losers. As a result, traders on a winning streak are allowed and......

J.P. Morgan Chase Faces Arising Issues

...trouble again, he has credibility. With that, trading executive Achilles Macris approved his trades. Iksil’s trading positions didn’t come to anyone’s attention at first because he was moving credit default swaps, complex instruments that are used as a type of insurance against companies defaulting. After theses “London Whale” losses, J.P. Morgan announced that all traders involved have also been separated from the bank without severance. In addition, Achilles Macris, chief investment officer in Europe and Asia, Javier Martin-Artajo, director of the office of chief investment officer, and Iksil have left the bank; these departures came just after the resignation of Ina Drew. Drew was based in New York but ran the chief investment office that was headquartered in London where all the major trading losses took place. Drew offered to return two years of compensation, the three other former employees could also lose as much as the past two years pay without forfeiture because of the claw back clause. (Treanor, 2012) Throughout the unveiling trading losses numbers kept changing. As of mid July numbers seemed to be balancing out and becoming measurable. From what started out as estimations in the millions quickly grew to over $5 billion in losses by the chief investment office. In addition, J.P. Morgan has found documents suggesting that traders were hiding the losses, bank executives were not confident with the figures reported by the CIO and decided to restate their first quarter......

...The motivation to adopt these state mandates stems from a need to reduce the dependence on more traditional fossil fuels that are high in carbon emissions and contribute to greenhouse gases. Reducing the reliance on fossil fuels that are predicted to be more expensive and volatile, such as natural gas, reduce dependence on “foreign” sources of fuels, such as fuel oil, and invest in cleaner sources of electricity that are needed to ensure compliance with any of the impending national legislative decisions that are under debate. These mandates are often justified as a means of providing the long term lowest cost of electricity for consumers. Supporters have stated repeatedly, that renewable energies will be less expensive in the long run when compared to the costs of new coal-fired generation facilities in particular. Thus, advocates would have us believe that pouring taxpayer money into renewable energy like solar and wind would create an estimated 5 million new jobs, end our reliance on imported oil and give us clean air. As welcome as those results would be, they're founded on the illusion that renewable fuels are an energy panacea and that the market is ignoring an easy answer to our problems, which of course, our wise politicians can see. When you look at the facts it does not support this. These energies constitute a part of our energy mix in the future, but they represent only a tiny fraction of our energy needs and won't lead us out of the economic and environmental...

The London Whale Scandal

...10th, 2012. A week later, JP Morgan disclosed that their initial estimated of losses was too low, and they raised it 50%. Regulators saw all of this as strange and a joint investigation was conducted by the S.E.C. and the F.B.I. Eventually, the full extent of the losses was discovered ($6.25 billion) and Artajo was the only one charged criminally. The regulators looked into numerous employees; however, Artajo was the only person they could build a strong enough case against. Nevertheless, Artajo’s supervisor, Ina Drew, and her supervisor and CEO of the company, Jamie Diamond, were held accountable in the public eye. These two knew about the London Whale trades and they knew that VAR limits were exceeded. Whether or not they knew about the financial misstatement cannot be proven. However, it is highly unlikely that the CEO of the company would not keep a close eye on trades if he knew that those trades exceeded risk limits. This is why most people believe that Ina Drew and Jamie Diamond did in fact know about the financial misstatements. The London Whale himself, Bruno Iksil, was not charged criminally. He was said to have cooperated with regulators. JP Morgan Chase & Co. were fined by U.S. and U.K. regulators for a combined $920 million. The firm will pay $300 million to the US office of the comptroller of the currency, $200 million to the Federal Reserve, $200 million to the SEC, and $219.74 million to the UK’s financial conduct authority. Ethics of the Case JP......

...losses shocked the investing public and drew attention to the CIO which was found to be bankrolling high risk credit derivative trades that were unknown to its regulators. The scandal demonstrated the failure in internal risk management in a reputational bank. Although the corporate governance failed to detect earlier, the internal management intentionally concealed the fact to regulators who should account for the disaster. The lack of proper risk management plan, the bank resulted in taking excessive risk, which led itself to catastrophic consequence. The core risk was the operational risk in the case of London Whale trade, the bank failed to detect the significant risks within the dangerous investments and made the proper risk treatment plan. Besides, the senior management made unwise decision posed serious strategic risk. Moreover, the bank concealed the fact that exposed the risk of compliance. II. What Were the Sources from Which the Early Church Drew Its Impulse Towards Mission, and How Did They Structure Their Identity and Communities to Impact the World with the Gospel.

...Final Essay HIST103 Assignments 2000 Word Essay (Summative) “What were the sources from which the early Church drew its impulse towards mission, and how did they structure their identity and communities to impact the world with the Gospel? In this essay I am going to discuss the motivating factors and forces that activated the passion and desire of the early church Christians. The sources I will dwell on are Scripture and religious experiences even though they are also other factors which were involved. The historical evidence of the input of the early church cannot be under rated or taken lightly as they touched the world with the Gospel. I will also dwell on some of the sources which they drew their motivation towards mission and how they structured it. The commonly held sources are scripture, tradition, revelation, reason and experience. These are impossible to fully isolate one from the other scripture has originated from reasoned understandings of things revealed to humans by God, nature or experience and has been documented in light of pre-existent traditions that have developed by interpreting earlier events. Our sources of theology deserve the same scrutiny, for many of the same reasons, as our worldviews. The commonly held sources of scripture, tradition, revelation, reason and experience are impossible to fully separate one from another. Scripture has resulted from reasoned understandings of things revealed to humans by God, nature or experience and has been......
