Guns Do Not Kill People WK 10 EN 1420 Three robbers entered a residence in Commerce City, CO; one of them pulled a knife, according to officials. The two men and a woman apparently had planned to rob an acquaintance, but the homeowner resisted the threat, drawing his semiautomatic handgun and shooting the two men. After the three fled, they called for medical help from a cousin's house. The police followed shortly thereafter. "As soon as they get out of the hospital, we'll be there to meet and greet them," said Sgt. Craig Coleman of the Adams County Sheriff's Dept. (Rifleman)
These are two of many different stories that are produced monthly by the magazine American Rifleman. Every issue gives 4 to 7 stories on how handgun's save lives every day. There are many people who believe that a handgun can save your life, but there also people who believe that they are just used for bad guys to kill. The Constitution states that we have the right to keep and bare arms, but there are some groups that have decided that is not right. They will do whatever it takes to change Amendment 2.
This year there was a new gun law added to the long list of gun laws. In Colorado and Oregon the law was passed with a huge margin. The law states that you cannot buy a gun at a gun show without a background check, and for it to be a gun show there only needs to be 3 or more people. So, in other words many of the police officers in the world will now be breaking the law when the switch guns with other officers. For instance, there are four officers standing around at the police station, and a couple of them decided to try out each other’s gun for a day or two. Under this new law, the officers…...

Research Paper Gun Control

...What is the purpose of Gun Control? Gun control is to regulate and control the sales of guns. It is an act that was passed in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson. Having possession of a fire arm can be taken as a sign of protection or a threat. A fire arm “…means any weapon (including a starter gun) expelling a projectile by the action of an explosive; the frame or receiver of any such weapon; any firearm muffler or silencer; or any destructive device” (The Gun-Control Controversy 1986). There are many controversial issues facing gun control in our society, such as: feeling protected in your own home, letting Veterans continue to carry firearms, and allowing retail stores to sell ammunition to the public. These issues, as well as other aspects of gun control, need to be further examined and brought to light in today’s society. Having a firearm in a household serves a purpose for people to feel protected. “A national survey finds that nearly half of gun owners (48%) volunteer that the main reason they own a gun is for protection; just 32% say they have a gun primarily for hunting and target shooting”(People-Press.org 2013). Having the authority to own a gun can be a good thing, but it can also be a downfall. For instance, a recent incident happened to the Senatore family in Toms River, NJ. The family was responsible for death of their neighbor. Unfortunately, their four-year-old son found the gun and pulled the trigger on his six-year-old neighbor. Later the police found out......

Guns Don't Kill People....Driving and Texting Kill People

...“Guns Don’t Kill People...Drives Using Cell Phones Do!!!!” ENG 215 Research and Writing Professor Erica Ellsworth 5 August 2012 “Guns don’t kill people, drivers with cell phones do!!!!!” Yes that is right!!!! Not to compare the severity of gun laws with the use of cellphones while driving but the later does have a very similar effect and end result.....people die!!! If you think that driving while talking on the phone without a hands free device is harmless? Tell that to the families of the 2,600 people that died in 2005 and the injured 333,000 in the United States that year. A lot of people think that this is a harmless act, but when studies prove that the reaction time of a 20 year old behind the wheel and on the phone is compared to that of a 70 year old driver without being on the phone, I think it is self explanatory. Although this has been an ongoing debate for years on why this act should have penalties and consequences. It seems that the United States is behind the power curve on reaching a consensus on what the penalties or consequences, if any, should be actionable by law. Studies have shown that this behavior, which is a way of life as we know it, is actually a very irresponsible act while driving on the highways of our country. I mean how many more people have to pass away in car accidents before these laws are passed in congress and enforced in such a manner that people will actually opt to shut their......

Guns Dont Kill People

...GOVT 2305 | Guns Don’t Kill People! | San Jacinto College University | Jeremy B. Reynolds, G00807501 4/25/2013 | Gun Control is a big topic today in congress and the presidency. After the horrific tragedy in Newton, CT that took the lives of 26 innocent victims, mostly 1st and 2nd graders, the spark of gun control in America has never been bigger. As a matter of fact, it is so big on President Obama’s plate right now, he has not even came onto the TV or radio to brief the nation on what is going on in North Korea and how he plans to defend our great nation. He would rather bark at congress and all us conservatives alike that gun control is more important. Growing up in Western North Carolina as a young boy, I was taught how to use and respect a firearm from both my father and his father. I knew from a very young age that firearms are very dangerous and could hurt me or my friends really bad if they were handled in the wrong way. I was also taught that we have firearms to protect us and our loved ones from anyone that tries to pose harm on us. And even to this day, those rules set forth by my father and grandfather live on. I have taught my children the same rules about firearms. They know how to use them properly and why we have them in our homes. Personal protection, not toys! Take for instance this story, in Houston, TX a 21 year old man is being credited with protecting his family from intruders. As the family was baking a cake in the......

Guns Don’t Kill People, Idiots with Guns Do

...Guns Don’t Kill People, Idiots with Guns Do My mother had a bumper-sticker that read, “I have the right to arm bears,” a play on words, of course, to the second amendments, “The right to bear arms.” As an advocate of Gun Control, she found that hilarious. Between advocates and antagonists of the “right to bear arms,” there are two primary and opposing interpretations of the second amendment. Proponents interpret it to apply to the individual, while antagonists believe it guarantees a collective right, not an individual right to bear arms. There is law to support both sides. I am not going to argue the merits of either view from a constitutional perspective; instead, I want to show that firearms in general are an impediment to American society, not a benefit. The only solution that will help to protect society is Gun Control. Primarily, we need to restrict gun ownership, the types of firearms/ammunition allowed and who is allowed to possess them. To put it nicely, you would have to be a person of diminished capacity to not believe that there is a relationship between firearms and the escalating rate of deaths in America. Our rates of murder, suicide, and accidental deaths by firearms are one of the highest (compared to other developed countries) in the world. In an article by Charles Kenny, he references a “survey of academic studies performed by Harvard University’s Lisa Hepburn and David Hemenway where they concluded “That high-income countries with more......

...1990, provides a broad definition for “disease or health-related conditions” but does not define a disease by itself. How Obesity is Measured? People are usually identified as obese based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by taking a person’s weight divided by the square of his or her height. The normal BMI range is between 18.5 and 24.9, while overweight is 25-29.9 and obese is 30 and above. For example, a person who is 5'5" tall and 180 lbs. (BMI of 30) and a person who is 6'0" tall and 221 lbs. (BMI of 30) are considered obese by the BMI measurement. Some people, such as muscle-heavy athletes, may have "overweight” or "obese” BMIs but may not have excess body fat. Obesity is Common, Serious, and Costly The debate over whether or not obesity is a disease grows as obesity rates and obesity related conditions are increasing in the United States. More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported an “epidemic” of 72 million obese people in the United States in 2006. A 2011 study by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, reported that obesity rates rose in 16 states within a year, with no state showing a decline. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008. The medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight. Lack of Willpower? Is obesity a lack of willpower? Is it related to our......

Ant101 Final Research Paper

...Final Research Paper Tanya ANT 101: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology   Final Research Paper Different societies exist throughout the world and within these societies each society develops culture that works best for them. Within these cultures they pass all their acquired knowledge and traditions down from generation to generation. Nevertheless, each culture has their own way of life, own marriage beliefs, their own values and feelings on life and religious beliefs. Cultures tend to have their own way to run their government, and ways to keep their economy up to their standards. Most importantly in cultural anthropology it is imperative to value culture relativism. This is the view in which no culture is superior to other culture when comparing systems such as morality, law, and politics (Crapo, 2013). Each culture beliefs are equally valid depending on the environment. In this paper, I will delve into a piece of my culture from an outsider’s standpoint, an etic perspective, and furthermore, I will examine another culture from an emic perspective on their traditional practices. Not only will I examine gender roles and equality in the United States workforce from an etic perspective, but also polygyny in Sub-Saharan Africa from an emic perspective. Throughout American history the number of women in the United States workforce has been increasing even though American society has always claimed men to be the breadwinners and heads of the house. According to...

...survival 100,000 years ago, hunting is now nothing more than a violent form of recreation that the vast majority of hunters do not need for subsistence. Today men practice hunting as nothing but one of those among a list of hobbies, because there is no requirement for predation by humans in modern times. Sport Hunting should be banned because it can be dangerous, cruel and it contributes to the extinction of animal species all over the world. Many believe in hunting as a hobby, because it serves as a great outdoor experience. It might even be considered as a good exercise, on a day out! The truth is that Hunting is, by its’ nature, a dangerous sport. Hundreds of individuals armed with long range weapons through the woods are a perfect formula for a tragedy. This is especially true when the average hunter only shoots one of two days a year. Hunting accidents destroy property and injure or kill cats, dogs, horses, hikers and other hunters. According to International Hunter Education Association, about 1,000 people are accidentally shot while on a hunting trip each year. Hunters also claim that they are not being cruel to wild animals. In the matter of fact it is considered a cardinal rule of hunting, never to leave an injured animal behind. Although this might be true for some, many once a year hunters just don’t take the trouble to finish an unsuccessful kill. The result is that each year, hundreds of animals suffer prolonged, painful deaths when they are injured but not......
