Music Genres

...Despite some differences on the surface, gospel music and R&B are actually lot alike in the sense they constantly reinvent themselves and continue to grow worldwide. Gospel music is very soulful just like R&B and can make you feel good and take you to other place when you hear the music. Gospel can reach a very large audience because there is no style restriction when it comes to this genre. Gospel music has much repetition which was carried over from the days when African Americans could not read. The repetition allowed them to participate in worship. Gospel can be traced back to the 18th century and were called “old negro spirituals” that slaves used to sing in the fields as they worked. There were not many instruments to use in the beginning. Gospel was mostly sung in cappella. The music started to use instruments such as drums, electric guitar, piano and saxophones to add to their sound. Since church was a place of worship for many people, this influenced R&B singers to use the same type of instruments in their music. As gospel started to emerge in the industry it was broken down into different genres such as gospel blues which is a mixture of blues guitar and evangelistic lyrics. There was urban contemporary and Christian country music and it was different because of the sound, lyrics and instruments used. There was much controversy over whether or not this could be considered to be church music because of certain hymns and there were different religions people......

The Action Genre

...Action Lights, camera, action! Action is the genre I have chosen. There are many stand-alone action films such as Commando, 48hrs and Con Air. There are even more action film series such as Die Hard, Rambo, James Bond and Underworld. The movie I have chosen to suit this genre is the action RED: Retired and Extremely Dangerous In 1920’s and 1930’s, action films were often about swashbuckling heroes, involving a damsel in distress and featured a romantic element such as the 1920 silent film The Mark of Zorro. The 1940’s incorporated war and western action films including the 1955 war story The Colditz Story. In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock re-invented the spy-action genre with his film North by Northwest and introduced action-orientated set pieces with the crop duster scene and the finale on Mount Rushmore. This film, North by Northwest, helped inspire producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman film their own spy-adventure film. James Bond, inspired by Ian Fleming’s novels, took the world by storm and is still used today. James Bond introduced some of the common elements and features of an action film that are still used today. In the 1970’s, gritty detective stories and urban crime drama’s led to a number of police officer films. Asian martial-arts themed movies also appeared including Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon. Also popularized by the cross of martial arts and cops and robbers, Chuck Norris entered with films like the 1977 Good Guys Wear Black. Steven Spielberg and......

Horror/Gothic Genre

...Gothic/Horror The horror genre has a huge impact on its audience with characteristics that are recognisable through generic techniques and features used in the various horror texts. In Van Helsing; a film directed by Stephen Sommers, Cirque Du Freak, a novel written by Darren Shan, and Thriller, a song by Michael Jackson, many horror gothic features and techniques are applied and are easily recognised to help anyone understand the horror genre more clearly. It is usual in horror texts for there to be a conflict between good and evil characters, dark and spooky settings, and a suspenseful build-up that causes tension for the audience and makes them wonder what might happen next. Van Helsing is about a troubled man who dedicates his life to rid the world of evil forces as he tries to hunt down the unanswered questions of his past. He finds himself on a quest in Transylvania to kill Dracula and prevent the continuation of his kind, along with Anna, a brave woman whose family has been killed by vampires for over 400 years. Dracula is a powerful and dangerous character who is immediately regarded as the antagonist from his first word, “success!” It is enhanced by a loud boom of thunder to create shock and an element of excitement for the audience and marks Dracula as a threatening and frightening character. Monstrosity is likewise displayed through Frankenstein’s character when we are introduced to him. We are given three close-up shots of his eyes, hand, and yelling mouth which...

Genre and Register

...typically concerned with variation in language conditioned by uses… and involves consideration of the situation or context of use, the purpose, subject matter and content of the message, and the relationship between participants.’ Consequently, my interpretation is that register can be - but is not solely - identified through linguistic choices and style. It is dependent upon the linguistic context and social situation surrounding the text- which can be identified as genre. Therefore, register is the language variety which results from the genre. Genre differs from register in that it is mainly applied to literary texts or texts which hold strict conventions such as newspapers, poetry, fictional writing and legal documents. Naturally then, to carry out a genre analysis would mean looking at a complete text rather than an excerpt as stated by Biber and Conrad (2009: 17-18) ‘Text excerpts are not adequate for genre analysis, because they do not necessarily represent the linguistic conventions that define the genre’. The data I obtained [Item 1] shows clearly that during the 24 hour period I received a larger range of differing language registers in comparison to the quantity that I produced. Language varieties I received came from a variety of contexts surrounding the text for example, listening to a lecturer deliver a presentation was formal in its approach and address and similarly, watching a BBC news programme where the presenter spoke formally in Standard English (or......

Genre Analysis

...WRT 104 March 6th, 2014 Genre Analysis Today’s world is unimaginable without Internet. It has brought the world in our fists. Most people use Internet in their day-to-day lives for looking up something, watching videos, and what not. But for the teens, Internet is all about social-networking. Most of them are always besides a laptop or mobile phone chatting on Facebook, tweeting about their new experience, or sharing photos on Instagram with friends. I am going to talk about Facebook. Facebook is the most used social-networking website today. It connects almost 1.2 billion people out of the total of 7 billion people living on the earth today. Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook on February 4, 2004 with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andre McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. On February 1, 2012 the company applied for 5 billion US dollars Initial Public Offering (IPO), making the company one of the biggest in history of technology and the biggest in the history of Internet. Facebook valued its stock at 38 US dollars per share, which priced the company at 104 billion US dollars – the largest valuation to the date for a public company. I first joined Facebook on January 7, 2011. During first ten days or so I explored the features of Facebook. There are many factors that makes Facebook as the number one social-networking website. It revolutionized the world with it games, picture sharing feature, status......

Genre History - Experimental/Electronica

...Joshua Kelly 205496 Joshua Michael Kelly – 205496 AUD207 Music Production Analysis “Genre History – Experimental/Electronic” Word Count: 1,650 Submission Date: 30 August 2012 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of ‘Bachelor of Creative Technology’ JMC Academy, 2012. 1|Page Joshua Kelly 205496 Once stated by a pioneer of the genre itself, “an experimental action is one the outcome of which is not foreseen” (Experimental Music, 2010). Arising in the mid-20th century, Experimental/Electronic Music refers to an electronically produced sound recorded on tape and arranged by the composer to form a musical composition. ‘The journey of this genre has been a long, boundary pushing and often negatively characterized one. Crossing multiple continents and facing cultural alienation, it has formed into a well-established but still sometimes undefined genre at the crux of technological advances’ (Kembrew McLeod, 2001). It is well placed in this day and time, and like all music nowadays, the inclusion of the internet has seen the genre become more and more popular across the globe. The term “Experimental/Electronic Music” is an umbrella term used in this report to label an idiosyncrasies list of subgenres made with the use of any combination of computers and electronic or acoustic instruments. ‘In no way is the use of this term an attempt to ignore the concrete differences between the way these subgenres are consumed and produced.......

Genres and Genre Film – the Movie "The Help"

...These black women raised white children and the children loved them and they loved them back, but yet were not allowed to use the toilets in their employer’s house. These are the moments of the black maids in 1963 in Jackson, Mississippi. These moments come when you see a black maid absurdly vacuuming a large stuffed bear or when one states: “Love and hate are two horns on the same goat.” Now that’s the spirit!” (The Help, 2011). Audiences know what to expect from movies from their Genres,” they tell their audience up front what to expect from the product they are buying. If they like a particular kind of story, chances are they will like this particular film, especially if the writer and director give the expectations a little twist” (Truby, 2010). Genre theory is used in the examination of films in order to enable the classification of films. Genres are dependent on many influences, such as story line, what the audience expects and who the director is. Genre theory is how we describe films; it is the method of shortening literary works. Plot and Story The feature-length film I chose was The Help (2013), which is an American Drama film depicting the lives of black maids and their white employers exposing the racism that the black maids faced on a daily basis. The time is 1963 set in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights movement. The film that follows the lives of two black maids and a southern society girl (Emma Stone), who returns home from......

Genre Theory

...Genre Theory The movie that I would like to talk about for this genre discussion is The Nightmare Before Christmas I would say that it falls under two categories, animation would be its main genre and its sub-genre would be classified as a musical. The way a musical is done is exactly the way it sounds, they add musical numbers throughout the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOtEdhKOMgQ They do not typically sing the entire time, but usually every ten minutes or so after watching some of the acting, it will flow into a musical number. Also the songs normally have something to do with what just happened with the actors. The Nightmare Before Christmas meets its musical criteria with more than ten songs in the entire movie. Three of its most popular numbers being “This is Halloween, Jacks Lament, and What’s this?” This film was written by Tim Burton, another movie I could compare it to and that he directed would be Sweeny Todd : The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, it is also in the musical genre. “It tells the story of a serial killer. Typically, however, musicals depict lighter fare, and indeed, in each case mentioned they make what might have been more difficult material easier for the audience to relate to.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011, Ch. 8.2). I feel that musicals are more of a required taste for movie lovers. I myself enjoy them as well as all movie genres, as the book says, they further add to the story and include more details and feelings into the movie.......

Media Genre

...First written assignment on Genre Hot Fuzz- In the trailer for ‘Hut Fuzz’ there are a lot of genre signifies to signify it’s an action film such as explosions, guns, people screaming in terror, and car chases, these conventions all suggest it is an action film, however there are also scenes such as when one of the police officer falls through a fence, and when they have to find a swan, these all connote it is also a comedy. This links to Rick Altman’s theory, the semantics of Hot Fuzz of the guns, explosions suggest it’s an action however the syntactic such as the dialogue of the characters portray a comedy. Although, the props of the film and a few scenes suggest it’s an action film, the lay out of the trailer, signify it’s a parody of an action film which is part of Steve Neale’s theory of the cycle. Robert Stam might support the idea that this film overlaps genre boundaries creating this film a hybrid genre. This could have been done to create a wider target audience but not too big as everyone would not feel engaged enough. Therefore it would get more publicity as people who enjoy action and people who enjoy comedy would go to see it. I think both of these genres have remained popular as with comedy you can use different jokes, different ways to make people laugh, ensuring people to feel like its constantly new material to keep them laughing and engaged in the comedy genre. The action genre has also stayed popular as its repetition and keeps them on edge of what stunt...

Genre Awareness

...In this paper I will be talking about three different movie posters of the American War genre. First I will describe where I found the movie posters, and then I will state the results of the visual elements. Then I will analyze, and critique the results of the findings. Introduction When someone walks along the hallway of a movie theater, they will see a series of movie posters which are there to advertise the movie. Humans are known to act on their first impression, and this is important in advertising because it will either attract or defer a potential viewer. Most people have a favorite movie genre, so they’re more inclined to watch a movie that appears to fit under their genre. Through the movie posters a patriotic theme is given off, which will invite in the intended audience. American War movies have very similar posters, although they will have different stories. Today I will be talking about three different movie posters of the American war genre: “American Sniper” (See Fig.1), “Fury” (See Fig.2), and “Lone Survivor” (See Fig. 3). The main purpose of this report is to find and analyze the visuals of the three movie posters. Methodology In order to try and test my hypothesis, I will need to find material that will allow me to gather the appropriate information. I am going to use the internet to find three movie posters of the same genre, and that genre is American war movies. First I will search on google images for American War Movies.......

Romance Genre

...The Romance Genre One of the most common themes in films is love. In Bordwell and Thompson’s study The Classical Hollywood Cinema (1998), they calculated that 85 percent of Hollywood films has romance as their main plot. Which means in most Hollywood films, Romantic Love is a major concern. Contemporary American cinema still uses the same formal in romance films. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl and then boy gets girl in the end. Bellour a film critic, identifies this convention as pattern that constitutes classical Hollywood cinema as a whole (“Alternation” 88). This illustrates that Hollywood often portrays and idealized version of love. Hollywood’s emphasis on romantic love and courtship, is almost like a reflection of America’s commercial enterprise. Producing movies only for mass entertainment purposes. We happen to live in society in which the choice of partners and marriages completely free. Although Pierre Bourdieu (1990) has argued that our relationships and marriage patterns have been heavy influenced by cultural institutions. As Hollywood film is particularly addressed to young people, film can be seen as an institution that has influenced their formation of ‘habitus’ or their behaviour towards courtship. Popular romantic films are often provocative and complex. They tell us about ourselves as men and women. Sexual desire, love, relationships and our fallibilities and fears. They show us how our beliefs, what we should think and how we should behave.......

Genre Analysis

...Nina Hagen Wrtg 1010-20 Using the Genre of a children’s story to articulate with monsters In Gordimers story “Once upon a time” uses the genre of a children’s story to articulate monsters in a suburban family by using the theme of a fairytale that clashes with the theme of a childrens story so he can use “monsters” in a suburban family. Gordimer uses phrases that kind of gives him the excuse to go in and articulate the monsters into the genre of a children’s story. Gordimer knew how to put everything in place to make it be called a “children’s story” Also, she the setting of the story in a good neighborhood, just people trying to be safe and you could kind of tell reading into the story a little disaster is coming, it is nothing brutal but it works for a children’s story type of theme. A fairy tale genre always ends up kind of automatically clashing with children’s stories. Gordimer is using a fairytale by saying in “For when they began to live happily ever after they where warned by that wise old witch, the husbands mother, not to take anyone of the street” This sentence right here is kind of what you get out of a fairytale genre and a children’s story genre. When they mention “happily ever after” You usually hear that phrase all the time in childrens stories or children type of things. For example: when you are watching a disney movie, which is a......

Genre Theory

...Genre and Genre Film Introduction to Film Rachel Kamrowski Instructor Day 5/2/2016 Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, “Any film with obviously unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas.” (Goodykoontz, 2014) Fantasy is a genre that typically includes a crossover genre, sci-fi, comedy, drama, even horror. The Harry Potter series is a great example of a fantasy genre with crossover and sub genres. It can be categorized also as a family film, and dependent on which movie in the series we are discussing, mystery, romance, and comedy as well. Harry Potter focuses on magic and the wizarding world which is central to it being a fantasy film, an escapism experience. This type of fantasy is a contemporary fantasy with the storyline playing out in modern times. For the purpose of this paper I will focus on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “The story at its simplest level is the idea about what happens, who does it, and all the reasons behind everything. The writer then chooses key characters and events, and arranges them...

Horror Genre

...Horror Genre Teresa Gann ENG 225 Introduction to Film Instructor John Thorburn July 4, 2016 Horror Genre Genre theory is used in film studies to assist in the facilitation of the film category. A genre is a type or category (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). A genre is dependent on the factors varying in story lines and what the audience are expecting. The theory creates shortcuts in the description of the film. A genre theory is useful and efficient in shortening academic works. Horror films seek elicit emotions that is a negative reaction from viewers by playing on the viewer’s primal fear. The horror films often deal with the fears of the viewer, nightmares, revulsion and unknown terrors. The plots of this genre include evil forces, personage or event, into the world we live in. The elements of the story include werewolves, ghosts, demons, serial killers, cannibals, evil witches, monsters, vampires, vicious animals, gore, and extraterrestrials. Genre helps the viewers decide what kind of films they enjoy watching. I will be discussing a summary of the movie Saw, what genre the movie is and what other sub-genres exist in this movie. One film that fits into the genre of horror is Saw. This film was made in 2004 and was directed by James Wan. The stars in the film were Danny Glover, Cary Elwes, and Leigh Whannell.
