Caleb…...

Triangle Shirt Waist Fire and Its Effect on Loabor

...escape was deemed to be inferior and the high casualties that were seen repeatedly showed this true. Some girls fled down a corridor that led to the street, but this soon was blocked by flames ("141 men and," 1911) one girl was seen jumping from a window only to meet her death by a plate glass roof that was shielding the sidewalk beneath it. This girl wouldn’t be the only one to die this way. Crowds of these girls began jumping to their deaths prompting the crowd to begin shouting “don’t jump!” but as proven later with the charred remains of girls inside the factory, the girls had really no choice and in a sense simply picked their own poison. Policeman comments about the remains were surprising to those that thought of the building as fireproof. One policeman stated simply “it’s the worst I ever saw” and another saying that the remains found were “…human, that’s all you can tell” ("141 men and," 1911). The bodies were described as a pile of ashes with congealed blood where they believed the neck once was. Bodies were piled in the elevator shaft, obviously in a mass attempt to escape the flames, more than 30 girls tried to save themselves and failed. The bodies that were strewn all over the streets blocking roads and making it rather difficult for firemen and other rescue personnel to position themselves with ladders and other life saving apparatuses against the building, including hose trucks and water pumps and provided the areas morgues a steady workload as they carried......

Censorship

...young girl to question law around him and begins to have doubts about what good they serve. In Fahrenheit 451, censorship in the world consists of book burning, manipulative parlor families, and the intolerance of those who attempt to be an individual. Book burning in the story is done by firemen to supposedly prevent society from unhappy emotions and unjust thoughts. Any person who was perceived or proved to possess any sort of reading material was reported to firemen using alarms, which were sent to the fire station. On duty firemen then immediately went to the home of the lawbreaker and burnt the books discovered. Books would be covered in kerosene and torched with a flame-thrower. Houses were made fireproof in order for the firemen to burn the books inside the house without causing too much destruction. Immediately after the books are burned, the offender is arrested and taken to prison. Although book burning was the most abrupt and outlandish form of censorship, people experienced mind censorship in their homes every day. Parlor walls were walls in a room used for watching television and specially designed "interactive" programs, designed to provide people with pleasure. Shows written for the soul purpose to please people in their parlors were watched on the walls. A script would be written with the home viewer's part included, but would be left out during the actual recording of the program while the......

It is based on a married couple who is experiencing issues which could lead to divorce. Caleb was a heroic fireman who saved lives every day but was allowing his marriage to go up in smoke. He desperately needed to change in order to save it. As a result, he decides to shares his dilemma with his father. In turn, his dad suggests that he postpone the decision for forty day and complete an exercise called “The Love Dare” which helps him to realize that divorce is not the answer but change is. The Review This movie has a Christian marriage coaching theme incorporated in it because the husband shares his problems with two people he trusts. As a result, they provided him with support encouragement, accountability, honesty, biblical truth, and guidance. In essence, they became his coaches, “Christian marriage coaching is the application of Christian coaching concepts and skills to facilitate growth, healing, and change for couples” (Collins, 2009, p. 253). There is a scene where Caleb is confiding in his friend at work about his wife desiring to get a divorce. William listens carefully and then imparts insight regarding the situation. He begins by reminding Caleb about the vows of marriage, placing a major emphasis on for better or worse. William continues to add that most people do not take their vows seriously enough. In addition,......

Social Media and Terrorism

...martyrdom. By his reasoning, 10,000 people out of a population of one billion Muslims, or 0.00001%, would go out to fight for al- Qaeda and even fewer would carry out a suicide operation. Those numbers might be a bit off but not by much. We are talking about a relatively small number of people. Because the number of people is so small, it is difficult to say why some become active supporters of al-Qaeda and others do not. What we can say is that the vast majority of people who watch and read al-Qaeda propaganda will never act violently because of it. Put metaphorically, the material may be incendiary but nearly everyone is fireproof. Since that is the case, it is better to spend our resources putting out the fires and issuing warnings about the dangers of fire rather than trying to ------------------------------------------------- fireproof everyone or remove incendiary material. Extending the fire metaphor a bit, how do we know where the flames are? We ------------------------------------------------- look for smoke. In this case, the smoke is the distribution and celebration of al- ------------------------------------------------- Qaeda propaganda. People who celebrate al-Qaeda propaganda on-line and who distribute ------------------------------------------------- large amounts of it on mainstream websites for the purposes of recruitment ------------------------------------------------- should be watched. Chances are that a few of them will decide to do......

Triangle Fire

...politicians submitted a resolution to the legislature to appropriate funds for an investigative commission, and on June 30 1911 the resolution passed, approving the appropriation for establishing the Factory Investigative Commission (FIC) (2004). In the next few years, the new board made changes to the Municipal Building Code as well. It provided a measure of protection by requiring the existence of safety devices such as fireproof materials and stairwells, fire alarms, extinguishers, and hoses. They also prohibited smoking in factories by 1916. The Factory Investigating Committee (FIC) recommend 28 new bills to the legislature, 25 of which are passed. This new legislation brought broad changes in the organization of the Department of Labor, now invested with legislative and enforcement powers. Stein insinuated that it established harsher punishment for violations of the labor law and the industrial code, and focuses on the very conditions that led to the great loss of life at Triangle. Provisions were made for fireproof stairways, doorways, lighting, fireproof nature of the building material, safe construction of fire escapes, and the inspection of older multi-storied buildings (p.130). Prior to the incident in 1911 a general strike was called. It was started by a 16 year girl whom disgusted with working conditions and pay. In 1909, an incident at the Triangle Factory sparked a spontaneous walkout of its 400 employees. The Women's Trade Union League, a progressive......

For any inconveniences that might occur with the products, the company has authorized local repair centers in multiple countries to repair any Steelcase product within 24 hours time, providing very good serviceability for long distance customers solve the problem easily to minimized time costs. This company was found in 1912 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and has more than 50 manufacturing facilities with more than 900 retailers around the globe, this making them achieve great reputation, also due to its qualitative products. Prior to become a global company, Steelcase Inc. gained most of its fame by reason of being a manufacturer of fireproof steel furniture and being one of the first company to produce metal office furniture instead of wood. One of the greatest problems that increase the time of order-delivery process is that there aren't enough transportation cycles to constantly pick up the finished product and deliver it to the customer. In my opinion there should be placed more transportation trucks in the logistics department to ensure that there is always a unit available to deliver the product without having to wait on average 12 days for that. First, this will create more job positions which leads to higher transportation costs but, it will reduce the time of delivery from 4 weeks to two weeks, the company will be able to serve......

Theatre Fire

...Iroquois Theater Fire Abstract On December 30, 1903 hundreds of adults and children were packed Chicago’s brand new Iroquois Theater to see a holiday showing of the popular comedy Mr. Bluebeard. The theater was the best in town, and was advertised to be completely fireproof by the owners and the architect who designed it. Little did the hundreds of patrons attending know that due to time and money constraints the theater was not as fireproof as everyone thought and it would soon become a fiery death trap. After it was all over with, more than 600 people would lose their lives making it one of the most deadly building fires in history, and forever changing fire science and safety. Introduction On December 30, 1903 hundreds of people filled the Iroquois Theater to see a matinee showing of the comedy Mr. Bluebeard, starring a popular actor Eddie Foy. The Iroquois theater was Chicago’s newest and most polished theater and had only been open for five weeks. The theater was advertised to be fireproof by the architect who had designed it, Benjamin Marshal. Marshal had studied many theater fires from the past and thought that his design would be completely safe. It was advertised that, “The theater had more than twenty five emergency exits and could be emptied in less than five minutes” (Weird and Haunted Chicago). Even a fire resistant curtain made of asbestos was installed to keep the audience safe just in case of a fire. The theater was designed to hold 1,600......

Empire State Building

...fast to build and provides a strong center. All the utilities, elevators, and stairwells are centralized in this design, making it easier for building modifications and repair (2). This design can be dangerous. If a part of the core is damaged, everything above that section will be cut off from ground access. This happened in the WTC during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, making it impossible for many people to escape the burning towers (2). II. Fire Protection System Stairwells The other risks that were considered were that the fire protection system would fail in the event of a tragic accident. The stairwells were taken into consideration in the event that people needed to evacuate. Fireproof stairwells were required for all high-rise buildings in 1930. The fireproof stairwell in the Empire State Building saved the lives of hundreds of people during this near-catastrophe (Scott 2007). Fire Spreading & Cooling Ducts The building had a compartmentalized structure so that fire could not spread, each floor had its own heating and cooling ducts and each room was separated by fire partitions (2). This risk was identified early on in the planning phase of this project in order to prevent fire from traveling from one floor to the next. The cooling ducts are critical as they would be able to save the entire building from overheating and complete destruction which would eventually result in a collapsed building. In conclusion, the creation of any......
