...Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace Brandi Collins Dr. Victor H.P. Villarreal, Ph.D. BUS 100 MAY 9, 2014 Effective communication is a very important key in a business environment. There have been many times throughout my work experience that this has been a proven fact. I want to elaborate on one of my work experiences in particular and how effective communication was very important. In 2008 I was a Claims Customer Service Representative for a company called Vangent. At Vangent we received inbound calls from Medicare beneficiaries about their Medicare insurance and healthcare claims that had been filed for services rendered to them by their physicians. The calls would be from different people of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities so effective in my communication with the beneficiaries was a part of my everyday job duty. Most of the beneficiaries I received calls from were at least age 65 and above and sometimes it was difficult for them to understand the information I was communicating to them. One of the ways I strived to make my communication effective was to always analyze the customer on the other end of the phone line. As it states in Chapter 8 of the Introduction to Business book, “To find the right words, begin with the needs of your audience (Williams, 2014, p. 128).” Being that each beneficiary that called most the time had different questions and attitudes I would always listen very carefully to identify what that beneficiary......

...Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace Natasha Francis Strayer University Dan Bailey BUS 100 August 2, 2014   Effective communication is defined as “sending the right message that is also being correctly received and understood by the other person.” Many times communication is happening but not in an effective manner. This is either because the sender is not sending the right message or the message is not being understood by the receiver. Effective communication requires both parties to be interested in hearing what the other has to say. A time when I experience effective communication in a business environment was when I took my two boys to their annual care check-up. The effective communication I experienced was eye contact, listening, and nonverbal communication. First, effective communication I experienced was eye contact. I perceived this to be an effective way to communicate because the doctor made eye contact with me to inform me of what was going on with my sons. I felt as if her making eye contact showed me that she was professional, it indicated a level of respect and confidence in her knowledge. Maintaining eye contact will also demonstrate to the speaker that the listener is paying attention. According to Nikki Parker (2013), “The key elements in effective communication would be saying what you mean in as few words as possible, eye contact, listening with both your eyes and ears,......

...1823-1144 Vol. 2, No. 1, April 2005 Strategies for Effective Communication of Educational Instructions in Nigeria Ezeja Ogili School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education Institute of Management and Technology Enugu, South-East, Nigeria Abstract Effective communication is usually the result of a careful selection of the appropriate medium or combination of media available. This is to ensure the transmission of message from one source to another by the use of form or illustration that seems desirable. It is referred to as the interaction of an individual or group with the environment through all the senses. The practical justification is that it is an instrument for accelerating the pace of all human transformation, to shake-off inertia in a people, achieve mobilisation and direct their productive forces in improving their living condition. This is also to show the relevance of teaching as a profession and the impact of a teacher in influencing the future development and growth of a learner. Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) design, production and their use facilitate the teaching and learning outcomes. However, the success of using the TLMs to meet the teaching objectives demands effective communication to satisfy instructional delivery. INTRODUCTION Communication as a concept has its origin from a Latin word ‘communicare’ which means to share or establish commonness. It can therefore be said that human communication means the process of sharing meaning,......

...As businesses continue to grow the need for effective communication grows along with it. The rate of success or failure for a company can depend greatly on the communication used within. There are many different aspects in regards to communication and some are more important than others. Not only do you have to be successful in communicating with your customers but it is also important to communicate effectively with your employees and your suppliers. When communicating it is important to pay attention to the purpose of why you are communicating, the style of your communication and making sure you are listening to what is being said. One of the most important aspects of communication with my company as well as many other companies is purpose. Specifically clear communication with a supplier. As a manager at Stone Theatres there is a continuous need to communicate effectively with a wide variety of different suppliers. In regards to the movie theatre it is important to contact the supplier in a timely manner, giving the company enough time to process and deliver the needed supply. If there is no communication there is a high risk of inventory levels going down, which can cause an issue with the company losing money. For example, one of the companies that provides us with our inventory for concessions fails to communicate with us. When providing us with our order they are unsuccessful in indicating ahead of time that some of the ordered items were unavailable to ship. ...

I have been working in the retail business for a number of years now in various forms. I have found that communication is a key part of doing business and is quite invaluable. It helps with diversity, team building, employee morale and global business. (Johnson, R. Small Business.Chron.com) Afterall, you couldn’t sell an automobile without communicating to the interested buyer what features the automobile has, how certain features work, what type of engine it has, etc. Sure, one could read the owner’s manual or read the brochures, but without the salesperson providing certain interesting details about the auto, showing you how the features work, etc. then basically, it’s just a shiny, nice looking mechanism. And you still don’t know squat about it! So, what is Effective Communication and how does it affect the listener? Effective Communication is a process using two (2) way communications which involves one person sending a message and the other person receiving that message and understanding what was sent. Then the listener replies back to the sender their understanding of what was sent to them. (Business Directory.com) The effect of this communication is highly significant. If the message that was sent is clear and precise, then the receiver has no problem......

In order to become successful within an organization, one must be able to communicate internally and externally. Without effective communication, an organization can fail in so many ways. There are many ways an individual can fail in communicating with other staff members. Teamwork plays a major role in effective communication. A team must be able to work together effectively to achieve goals and purposes. In healthcare, teamwork is required to perform great quality care. Even physicians must practice teamwork, because they rely on their nurses to help deliver care. There is no physician known that can run a practice alone without the help of others. In teamwork, one must be able to lead, be committed, and understand the aspects of the job. By performing these methods, the team members can learn how to achieve higher level goals and deliver member satisfaction. There can be the best outcome ever when pulling together as one in an organization. I believe that the best organizational......

Effective Communication

...Effective Communication Health care organizations require multiple communications on a daily basis with inside and outside resources as well as the communities they serve. Effective communication is encouraged for better understanding and is essential for positive patient outcomes and the success of the health care organization. If communication is absent, errors occur which jeopardize the health care organization’s reputation as well as patient outcomes. Communication is an essential function of health care organizations, as it is the way information is shared across service lines and departments. Also, the organization’s structure plays into whether or not effective communication is possible. Effective communication is developed and enhanced through an organizational model or structure that the health care organization follows. According to Hearst Newspapers, LLC (2016), "an organizational structure defines an organization through its framework, including lines of authority, communications, duties and resource allocations... it is driven by the organization’s goals and serves as the context in which processes operate and business is done” (What Is an Organizational Model?). Effective communication as defined by the organization’s organizational structure ensures that barriers are overcome and clear communication is shared throughout the health care organization. Mercy Health Muskegon (MHM), the organization I work for, utilizes the functional organizational structure......

Communication is one of the key essentials needed for a company to operate (“Effective Communication in the Workplace,” n.d., para. 3). Effective communication in the workplace is required to satisfy customers, improve quality and increase efficiency. It is important that employers make sure all employees have excellent communication skills within an organization as departments and teams, but also among external partners. Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace Communication had been a significant issue in my workplace that Human Resources along with executives decided to introduce to all employees a Communication: Talk to Me the Right Way course. The company required that all employees participate in a three-day workshop focusing on effective speaking, body language, and digital communication. At first the thought was here we go another boring class the powers that be are making us attend. The skills and techniques I learned would end up helping with what could have been a disastrous situation. Training for Communication: Talk to Me the Right Way had just finished up, it was year-end. The goal at year end as a Business Analyst is to manage a particular customer account from the beginning to end during open enrollment and retain current customers for 1/1 which is......

Effective Nonverbal Communication at Work Success in leading and functioning within any organization depends upon the effective use of nonverbal communication. On the factory floor or in the corner office, getting things done requires employees and managers alike to become skilled at reading others and emitting appropriate nonverbal cues that support their messages. The effectual exchange of ideas and clear delivery of instructions relies on something more than selecting the “right” words. As we will see, most of the communication process takes place in the realm of the unspoken. ...Effective Communication Name Class School Name “In any organization large or small depends on the hard work of its employees to be successful” (Effective Communication Paper). “While we spend a lot of time and effort on the skills we need to do our job, such as accounting and finance skills, marketing skills, strategic development skills, improving communication at work requires strong interactive communication skills – and we don’t seem to put as much effort into these as we should to be effective” (Wilhelm). “With communication, employees can coordinate their efforts with other employees and managers to make their hard work seem almost effortless” (Effective Communication Paper). Today, it seems the reason that a company fails is because communication is no existent. “If the staff has not been made aware that there is a goal to attain, they certainly cannot contribute to accomplishing it.” (Effective Communication Paper). I am currently not employed, but I used to work for a tea lounge and spa. At my organization I was the manager and so I had a huge responsibility to uphold. There are many techniques that were effective for sharing ideas and information. In our spa and lounge we had a bulletin board that was out for the public so they could read our new or upcoming promotions. Also we they are able to place flyers for everyone else to view. We also had one just for the staff to make suggestions or post concerns anonymously. Sometimes the staff was nervous to......
