DeKay, Sam H. (2012). Interpersonal Communication in the Workplace: A Largely Unexplored Region[->0]. Business Communication Quarterly, Vol. 75 Issue 4, p449-452. doi: 10.1177/1080569912458966.
This article was interesting to me because of the recent assignment we studied on communication and the importance of written communication. In this article, the author explains, “writing ability, the development of which occupies considerable attention in most business communication courses, was not viewed as a primary concern when considering executives for promotion” (DeKay ,2012, 450). This article has been peer-reviewed, therefore considered to be of scholarly value. The author’s work as an adjunct associate professor at the Graduate School of Education, St. John’s University, Jamaica, Queens, New York and as V.P. for corporate communications at BNY Mellon Corporation in New York City supports his authority.
Hynes, Geraldine E. (2012). Improving Employees’ Interpersonal Communication Competencies: A Qualitative Study[->1]. Business Communication Quarterly, Vol. 75 Issue 4, p466-475. doi: 10.1177/1080569912458965. What I found interesting about this article was how important interpersonal communication is in the work place and the lack of interpersonal communication skills graduating students have. “While typical undergraduate business degree programs offer a course or two in writing and formal speaking, a course dedicated to interpersonal communication or daily workplace interactions is rarer”(Hynes, 2012, 473). This article has been peer-reviewed, therefore considered to be of scholarly value. Hynes source of authority comes from being a professor and an author. ...English 102 November 26, 2007 Communication is the key Communication is the key to any relationship. These are seven words frequently given as advice to a person struggling with a relationship in her life. Whether a person is having problems with a boyfriend, not getting along with her parents, fighting with a friend, or struggling in school because of a certain teacher, these words can help resolve her problem. Talking about the conflict will lead to a resolution. If communication is not available, two people will not be able to develop a relationship. When a person is constantly surrounded by people she is unable to have a conversation with, she will began to feel very alone. This can affect the way she feels about herself. A person’s self-esteem is lowered dramatically when she is unable to communicate with the people around her. In the world today, being different is seen as a bad thing. While growing up, if a person doesn’t have the same clothes, shoes, or hair style as the other children, she is often made fun of. Most people do not interpret being different as simply an expression of ones own unique style, rather they simply view them as being “strange” or out of the norm. Along with not dressing the same as others in their class, speaking a different language is also associated with being “strange”. This is becoming a bigger issue because America is becoming more diverse. According to Farai Chideya, “Nearly one-tenth of the population is foreign-born”......

Key Points

...Key points A clear regard for history, an honest understanding of where we are today, and having the intellectual curiosity as we look to the future will be key to one’s ability to be an effective leader. These are the key points that I gleaned from the readings that were assigned to me. As a student of history and political science, I am always impressed when an author can help us understand where we are today, by giving us a clear understanding that much of what we will see in the future has at least some basis from the past. This is not to say that we will be in an endless cycle of repeated patterns, but that we will for the most part see traces of the past as our future unfolds. I was particularly impressed with the way Devereaux described the 75 year cycle and how we are now in the midst of the final 25 years of what she describes as the badlands. It is true that the majority of the transformational change that we encounter typically happens at the end of a cycle just as we transition into a new era. In my opinion, sound decision making should be made with an understanding of history as it relates to the question at hand. Thomas Friedman’s words give us an understanding of history, but he also talks about how we can learn from the successes and failures of America’s decisions during the last 50 years. He paints a vision for us to look to as we sit on a precipice where we as a nation clearly have a choice to make. Do we continue to act ‘as dumb as we wanna......

...Keys to Function Management is the backbone of running a successful business. When management skills are not met by the supervisor then the company fails there employees and the business spirals downward. I believe knowing how to manage is one of the most important skills to have as a supervisor. To manage is to have a comprehensive plan on how to organize, lead, and control your workplace. Employees tend to notice supervisors when the lack of management skills are presented and the employees therefor tend to slack off and/or not meet there job expectations. For example, where I work there is a supervisor that directly manages day to day operations including the employees and needs of the employees. I work at a private ambulance company based in Los Angeles County, California. This ambulance company provides medical care and transport to our contracted facilities including convalescent homes and hospitals. The employees and I can see that our supervisor lacks the management skills necessary to run a successful business. In return the employees at this company are more prone to slacking off because of the lack of control and leadership skills. The employees also seem to leave the company pretty often solely because of this supervisor. He always implements new rules but never enforces them, gives the employees attitudes when they ask him for a forever such as switching shifts with another coworker, and doesn’t provide sufficient wages, benefits, or even breaks. There are a......

Communication Is the Key

...Communication is involved in almost every aspect of our interactions with others. By this communication and relationships are connected. You can't have a relationship with someone without communicating with them. I will attempt to identify what communication is, the ineffective and effective types of communication and how it is important in relationships. Communication involves how we express our thoughts, ideas, and feelings to others, including what we say and how we say it (Egan). When we communicate with others, we also communicate attitudes, values, priorities, and beliefs. No matter what we actually say to other people in words, we send messages about what we think of them, what we think of ourselves, and whether or not we're being sincere and genuine in what we say (Laurer). Our non-verbal communication are those things we don't say with words, but with our gestures, our facial expressions, and our attitude really tell what people are really thinking. What we say and do, and how we say and do it, directly shapes how people experience us (Rubin). In fact, many times, the opinions people form about us are based on the way we communicate. In other words, communication is a two way street. Ineffective communication is characterized by indirect actions in which we do not get to the point, never clearly states purpose or intention. When we communicate with people, were sometimes passive and tend to be a little reserved, which can give off many thoughts. We may......

The management of business operations for an organization that conduct the business in more than one country. International Business is all commercial transactions private and government between two or more countries. Private companies undertake such transactions for profits; governments may or may not do the same in their transactions. These transactions include sales, investments and transportation. All companies are affected by global events and competition, whether large or small, since most sell output to and secure raw materials and supplies from foreign countries. International business is similar to the national business in many ways, but there are significant differences that must be taken into account for the successful implementation of international strategies. The main problem is to overcome differences in national cultures, which manifest themselves quite often. International business operates in countries with different cultures, so the same formal parameters of starting a new business (the amount of capital raised, number of employees, production assets, performance incentives, etc.) can be...

Throughout the United States Marine Corps’ history Marines have won numerous amounts of battles and completed numerous amounts of tasks. The key to Marines success has been because of our Corps’ ethos: honor, courage, and commitment. The Marine Corps ethos made the basis of leaders in the Marine Corps. This is what makes the Marine Corps so successful at what they do. The Marine Corps noncommissioned officer (NCO) is the small unit leader that is out there taking charge during times of war and peace. The Marine NCO is the embodiment of the Corps’ history and traditions because through out history NCO’s have successfully led their Marines in combat and put their lives on the line for their fellow Marines. The first ever Marine to earn the Medal of Honor was an NCO. Sergeant John F. Mackie received a Medal of Honor when he was a Corporal in 1862 in the Battle of Drewry’s Bluff. While their ship was under attack, Sergeant Mackie led his Marines to return fire at the enemy after several other Marines were dead and wounded. Key Points

...one of the key points to consider about an organization is the mission and strategy of the organization. What are the company’s goals? How do they plan to go about achieving them? These simple questions can actually help lead the organization toward prosperity. The mission and strategy of an organization is a key element as it helps provide a clear explanation of the organization’s intent, as well as provide a good point of reference when considering any required changes. There are several important requirements that an organization’s mission and strategy must meet in order to be effective. The mission and strategy first must be realistic. Rees & Porter (2006) identify unrealistic mission statements as a potential pitfall in organizational development, as “some mission statement may provide a useful focus both internally and externally, the danger is that many are aspirational rather than realistic statements of what can and even should be attempted” (p. 227). If the mission and strategy are unrealistic, their value is quickly lost as they are viewed as unattainable goals. The mission of an organization should be communicated to all members of the organization clearly in order to be effective. While the mission and strategy may have been properly developed, a more broad communication with members of the organization will prevent confusion over the strategy behind required changes and the goals of the organization. Effective communication of the......

Communication Is Key

...Communication is Key Stephanie Rose COMM 200 Prof. Holmes Sept. 6, 2012 Communication is Key Women tend to want to talk and men think that women should know what they are thinking without saying anything at all. This is often the downfall of a marriage, the failure to communicate. It depends on who you ask if self-disclosure is good for a marriage or not. Most women think that it’s good to talk about their feelings, likes and dislikes. Women will more willingly tell about things going on in their day with work or friends. Men, on the other hand, seem to think that women share too much. Men do not normally like to talk about feelings and they will not easily or willingly share their thoughts. Self-disclosure is a means of communication that needs practice, and all couples could benefit from it. It’s undisputed that communication is the key to any relationship. “Quality communication is defined somewhat differently from study to study, but research consistently has shown a link between happy marriages and "self-disclosure," or sharing your private feelings, fears, doubts and perceptions with your partner” (Schoenberg, 2011). Although, I believe that self-disclosure is a wonderful way to keep a relationship happy, I do not think many men believe in sharing there inter most thoughts and feelings. It has been my experience that when I tried to open the lines of communication with my husband, it normally ends in a comment like “do we have to talk......
