...Wall(1993) suggested 15 washback hypotheses. Bailey designed a flow-process diagram, showing how the washback effect works. Prodromou divided the backwash effect into overt and covert ones. Hughes(1984) put forward “PPP”(participants, process and product modes. Moreover, the empirical studies of washback generally focus on the following three aspects: (1) the working mechanism of washback (2)the nature of washback, positive or negative and (3) the strategies for improving positive washback and inhibiting negative washback. Compared with the studies abroad, the systematic research on the washback effect smoothly develops although it starts late. Through the analysis of various kinds of language test carried out all over the country such as CET4&6, BEC, College-Entrance Examination, scholars obtain a deep understanding of the interrelationship between language testing and teaching. In a word, the language test washback can be either positive or negative. A scientific and justice test will be able to give the objective and accurate judgment of students’ abilities, manifesting the extent to which students understand what they had learnt and enabling the students to find out their own disadvantages for further development. Meanwhile, the scientific and justice test make the teachers realize the problems involved in the design of teaching content and methods for the according adjustment.
