...Assess interpretations of Hatshepsut The female pharaoh, Hatshepsut, is arguably one of the most influential people of ancient Egypt. For thousands of years, the workings of Hatshepsut have been subject to multiple interpretations, from both her time and the modern day. An evaluation of the effectiveness of her reign can be resolved from the reliability and validity of evidence presented today, both primary and secondary. In one respect, Hatshepsut is viewed as the female pharaoh who had a particularly unsuccessful reign that was devoid of any real achievements. Historians writing in the 1970’s and 1980’s often made sexist and unfounded assumptions about Hatshepsut’s rule, including her apparent scheming to take the throne from the rightful heir, her inability to lead a military, and her untimely and unnatural death. Steindorff and Seele for example, describe Hatshepsut as a ‘high handed woman who kept her co-ruler on the sideline and thwarted his ambitions’. A suggestion like this however is challenged heavily by primary evidence and modern research. The idea that Hatshepsut’s relationship with Thutmose III wasn’t that of dictator and slave is shown through the acts of genuine respect she performed, such as not ‘getting rid’ of him when he was young as many other powerful figures would have, erecting monuments of both him and her, and also giving him control of the army. ...Assess the causes of the General Strike There were many factors which lead to the General strike of 1926, some more important than others. One of the key factors which led to the General strike was Red Friday. This was a General strike that was planned to take place on the 31st July 1925. The background of this strike was that mine owners said that they were obliged to cut wages for their workers, and that they intended to do so. This angered the miners and the miners trade union, who organised the Red Friday strike to be held on 31st July 1925. The Government under Stanley Baldwin only managed to prevent this strike by offering the miners a temporary subsidiary to maintain wages. However, this only prevented the strike but did not solve the problem. The miners and their union were still angry at the mine owners. Another reason for the general strike of 1926 was the attitude of the people after the war. When the men returned from the war in France, they were promised by the Government "a land fit for heroes". This idea included new housing being built and good jobs for the men who had fought for their country. This however, never happened. Many men returned to their old jobs in the mines with poor wages. It is therefore not surprising that these men were not great supporters of their government. They believe that the role of all institutions in society can be understood in terms of how they relate to the economic system. ...Assess feminist views on the role and function of religion (33 marks) Feminists regard religion as a main component in the perpetuation of patriarchy in contemporary society, it perpetuates oppressive gender roles, marginalises women and ensures male domination is retained. In terms of the structure of religious organisations, feminists point to the fact that they are male dominated, even though women often make up more of the attendees, often men will occupy the more central and sacred positions in places of worship. This reinforces the subordination of women, and their exclusion from sacred practices mirrors their continued exclusion from high ranking careers, specifically in politics, via the glass ceiling effect. Functionalism is a macro, consensus theory that has the idea that society is functioning well and efficiently. Functionalists believe education provides universalistic norms i.e they see it promotes the norms and values of wider society. One would suggest that Functionalists are bit naive in their view of the education system, as it could be argued that education doesn't benefit everyone, especially the working class. The first functionalist concept, one will be testing out is the Equality of Opportunity. The functionalist Durkheim says schools stress the importance of equal opportunities. In juxtaposition Marxists would say that this is a form of brainwashing.
